A Measure of Motion Salience for Surveillance Applications

چکیده

A measure of motion salience is proposed for surveillance applications. In this context, salient motion is taken as motion that is likely to result from a typical surveillance target (e.g., a person or vehicle traveling with a sense of direction through a scene) as opposed to other distracting motions (e.g., the scintil-lation of specularities on water, the oscillation of trees in the wind). The measure that is proposed makes use of spatiotemporal gradient lters to characterize the extent to which a single coherent motion dominates local regions in space-time. Empirical results show that the measure is capable of making the desired distinctions. The signiicance of the approach lies in its ability to provide information about motion salience based on relatively simple, early vision operations. Such information can provide vital input to subsequent processing in attempting to distinguish targets of interest from mere distractors.

The Reliability and Concurrent Validity of Digital Inclinometer, Smartphone Applications, and the Cervical Range of Motion Device for Measuring the Cervical Range of Motion

Objectives: Changes in the Range of Motion (ROM) are essential criteria in determining the severity of spinal disorders and could be effective in predicting pain progression. Instruments to measure the ROM are costly and unavailable in most therapy settings. While there is a tendency in therapists to use their smartphones instead, there is no report to measure the suitability of smartphones to ...

Robust motion detector for video surveillance applications

1 This paper presents a robust motion-detector video sensor. It is intended to operate in surveillance applications for long periods of time with time-varying noise level. It makes use of the fact that whenever there is no motion a similarity measure between frames tends to have similar values.

Traffic Scene Analysis using Hierarchical Sparse Topical Coding

Analyzing motion patterns in traffic videos can be exploited directly to generate high-level descriptions of the video contents. Such descriptions may further be employed in different traffic applications such as traffic phase detection and abnormal event detection. One of the most recent and successful unsupervised methods for complex traffic scene analysis is based on topic models. In this pa...

A Social Semiotic Analysis of Social Actors in English-Learning Software Applications

This study drew upon Kress and Van Leeuwen’s (2006, [1996]) visual grammar and Van Leeuwen’s (2008) social semiotic model to interrogate ways through which social actors of different races are visually and textually represented in four award-winning English-learning software packages.  The analysis was based on narrative actional/reactional processes at the ideational level; mood, perspective, ...
